Every year our Private Records team hosts students on internships and on work experience placements.
Some of these students are studying archives and records management or public history and are required to complete an internship as part of their postgraduate course. These internships provide students with hands-of experience of cataloguing a collection and considering the steps involved in making it available to the public. If you are interested in completing an internship at PRONI as part of your postgraduate course, please contact us (access@communities-ni.gov.uk) and a member of the Private Records team will discuss your options with you.
The Private Records team has hosted postgraduate students from a range of academic institutions. These include students from the MA in Archives and Records Management programme at University College Dublin.
The two-week internship I took part in was fascinating and gave a great boost to my career development, allowing me to pursue a career path in archives and public history, Sean Hayes.
The team have a longstanding relationship with the Centre for Public History at Queen’s University Belfast. Each year, they host at least one student from the MA in Public History programme on a 30-day internship.
The team also regularly hosts secondary and third-level students on short work experience placements. These placements are helpful to students who are considering options for further study and are thinking about a career in archives and records management, public history or cultural heritage. Applications for unpaid work experience are coordinated by NICS HR. The NICS Work Experience Policy provides information and guidance about how to apply for work experience.
