PRONI Historical Maps Viewer

Welcome to the PRONI Historical Maps viewer, developed in partnership with Land and Property Services (LPS). Use this application to search and browse seven historical OSNI maps and five modern basemaps (including aerial imagery).

The viewer displays boundaries of:

  • counties
  • parishes
  • townlands 

The map viewer also includes information on sites, buildings and landmarks of historical interest.

This application has been previously incompatible with Internet Explorer 11. It is recommended to use an up-to-date or alternative Internet Browser.

Searching

The search text box (located at the top left-hand side of the screen) enables you to search by townland, parish or town/ city name; or using modern postal address.  

You can browse the map or navigate to a particular area by using the plus and minus buttons, the rollerball on your mouse, or by 'clicking and dragging' using your mouse.  To find out information about your area of interest (the townland name, parish and county), press on a particular point on the map. 

 

Tools and widgets

The application has a number of useful tools on the top right-hand side to support your search. The table below provides a basic summary of each widget (left to right), and you can access more detailed guidance using the Help Widget in the application.

Basemap GalleryAllows you to choose from a selection of five basemaps.  
Layer ListShows each of the optional map layers which can be switched on or off.  
SwipeProvides a vertical bar on your screen which can be dragged back and forth to compare one map layer with another.  Swipe Widget
LegendDetails the meaning of the various outlines and symbols.
BookmarkAllows you to name and store links to specific areas, so you can easily navigate to a specific point during future visits (using the same PC/ tablet).
HelpContains a guide on how to use the application and a links to downloadable guidance. Also provides more details on using each of the widgets.
InfoProvides an overview of the maps and datasets available on the application.
