Londonderry Papers Find Permanent Home in PRONI

Londonderry Papers Find Permanent Home in PRONI
The Public Record Office of Northern Ireland is delighted to announce the acquisition of the Londonderry papers (1670 – 1950).

At the core of the collection are the papers of the Marquesses of Londonderry and their estates in Counties Down, Donegal and Derry. These include a detailed record of title deeds, leases and rentals which provide a valuable source for tenants’ names.

There is also considerable political correspondence relating to Ulster Unionism and opposition to Home Rule from the 1880s to 1920s. Notable correspondents include: Edward Carson, James Craig, Sean O’Casey, and Winston Churchill.

Overall the archive occupies over 172 linear metres of shelf space and contains some 30,000 individual documents, volumes, maps and plans. The records are held under PRONI reference numbers D654, D2846 and D3099. The catalogue for the three collections is available online on PRONI’s e-Catalogue.
