Highlights from Volume 3A
A note appears in the inside cover of the volume regarding money received from individuals to help fund the 'new Quay'.
On the 15th February 1704, (see page 22), nine individuals and families who were to receive poor relief from the Corporation are listed in the minutes.
Also in 1704, preparations are discussed regarding a visit by the Lord Lieutenant, to the City: "There will be occasion to provide stabling for his horses and to make provision for his servants, and likewise to entertain himselfe at dinner." Costs relating to the visit were to be payable by the Corporation.
In June 1705, the minute book records that "This Common Council do order that the Mayor of this City for the time being do from henceforth on every market day carry his Rod, and if he pleases on every other day." The mayor at this time was Henry Ash, Esquire (see page 32).
On the 4th September 1705 a new Act of Parliament regarding the regulation of weights and measures is read - see page 33 for details of this.
On 1st November 1708, see page 122, "Upon a debate in this Common Council the Question being put whether according to the Chamber, the Chamberlain holdes his office during good behaviour, or Annually. Having put to the Vote, it was carried by a Majority of Votes, that he holdes his office Annually."
On page 133 "Sallories paid by this Common Council for the Enshuing Year Ending the 2nd of February 1709, to be paid quarterly", included one hundred pounds to the Mayor, and to ."Mr Nowill for Teaching Six Boyes in the Art of Navigation, six pounds."
On page 315, yearly Council salaries are again listed, this time for the year 1718. The Mayor is still in receipt of one hundred pounds per year, but there are additional employees, such as an organist, clock keeper and Hall cleaner. The "Charity Schole" also received twelve pounds for the year.
