The Society of Archivists Opens a new browser window. website has information on career development, continuing professional development, postgraduate study and education and training opportunities across the three disciplines.

Archives and records management

Several universities in the United Kingdom and the Republic of Ireland offer a range of graduate and postgraduate courses on archives, records management and related topics.  Courses offered can be studied full-time, part-time or by distance learning, thus making it easier for those in full-time employment to take up study.

Conservation and preservation

  • Society of Archivists (SOA) Opens a new browser window.
    The Society runs the Certificate in Archive Conservation.  This is provided as an in-service scheme and is restricted to members of the Society only.  Information about postgraduate courses leading to archival qualifications is also available.

  • Institute of Conservation (ICON) Opens a new browser window.
    This organisation runs the Professional Accreditation of Conservator-Restorers (PACR) Opens a new browser window. scheme which implements standards for the care of cultural heritage across a range of disciplines.

    ICON also manages the Heritage Lottery Fund internship scheme which has been setup to tackle the shortage of practical and preventive conservation skills in the UK and increase the number of trained conservators and conservation scientists.

  • The National Preservation Office (NPO) Opens a new browser window.
    The National Preservation Office provides an independent focus for the preservation of and continuing accessibility to cultural heritage materials held in libraries, archives and museums in the United Kingdom and Ireland.

  • Anna Plowden Trust Opens a new browser window.
    This organisation offers grants for training conservation students.  It also provides part-funding towards the cost of attending courses and conferences for conservators in the private sector.  There is currently a grant for raising awareness of the contribution made by the conservation profession toward safeguarding of the national heritage.  The Trust also supports the Conservation Award for Innovation and Research in Conservation.
