PRONI has a wide range of material relating to every aspect of local history. These include manuscript sources such as the Tithe Applotment Books, which list the occupiers of titheable land c 1830, landed estate records, church records and ordnance survey maps.
PRONI also has numerous printed sources, such as the General Topographical Index, which was published in connection with the 1901 Census and The Belfast and Province of Ulster Directory. It also holds the Householders Index which is a guide to the names listed in the Tithe Applotment Books and the Griffiths Valuation, and these are available on the shelves of the Public Search Room.
These records reflect the variety of subjects which the researcher can pursue while tracing the history of a particular locality and its community and are available for most localities in Northern Ireland.
